When Should You Buy Your Wedding Dress? Here’s A Wedding Dress Shopping Timeline from our London Bridal Boutique

February 3, 2026

If you’re a bride getting married in 2026 or 2027, you may be wondering, when should I buy my wedding dress? At Love Spell Design, we truly understand that choosing your wedding dress is one of the most meaningful moments of your wedding planning journey. From the excitement of saying “yes” to your partner to the moment you officially say “yes” to the dress, we know that timing plays a huge role in how relaxed and enjoyable the overall experience feels.
If you set out a clear plan, and realistic expectations, wedding dress shopping can be calm, joyful, and even magical – it’s not all stress! That’s why we’ve decided to share our expert timeline below to explain to you when to buy your wedding dress – and therefore help you feel confident, organised, and excited every step of the way.

So, When Is the Best Time to Buy a Wedding Dress?

If there’s more than 6 months to go until your wedding:

12 + months before:
Set your budget, confirm your venue, and begin defining your wedding style straight away.

10 – 11 months before:
Secure your photographer and start researching bridal boutiques to visit in your local area, or further out. – Book those train tickets in advance to avoid high travel costs!

7 – 9 months before:
Order your wedding dress and begin coordinating bridal party outfits – by this point, all colour schemes and themes should be confirmed.

4 – 5 months before:
Plan how your dress will be transported to your venue. This is important! At Love Spell, every dress comes with a transportable handheld bag which can also be carried as hand luggage on a plane.

2 – 3 months before:
Attend your alteration appointments,- also essential.

1 month before:
Final fitting and dress collection.

Short on Time? Here’s How Long Before the Wedding You Should Buy Your Dress:

If there’s less than 6 months to go before your wedding:

6 months before:
Focus on fast-delivery gowns, including rush-order options, allowing time for essential alterations.

Under 3 months before:
Sample sale gowns become your best option, paired with prompt alterations. Don’t worry- we still have many gorgeous high quality, luxury sample sale gowns to choose from if your wedding dress timeline is tight.

Our trusted stylists at Love Spell Design will always guide you toward the best possible solution for your date.

12 + Months Before Your Wedding

1. Confirm Your Date & Set a Realistic Budget

Once you have locked in your wedding date, your dress timeline will naturally follow, and you will become clearer on when to buy a wedding dress with a set wedding date in mind. At Love Spell Design, our made-to-order gowns typically range from £1,700 to £3,000, with sample sale pieces usually under £1,000 (up to 70% off the made-to-order price, depending on the dress).

Alterations generally average around £195 to £495 and may include:

  • • Hem adjustments
  • • Bodice, waist, or hip shaping
  • • Strap refinements
  • • Adding a bustle for the train
  • • Fittings with our skilled seamstress

If fewer changes are required, alteration costs will generally be lower. Every gown leaves us steamed, carefully hung, and ready to wear, no matter your wedding dress shopping timeline.

2. Get Clear on Your Wedding Style

Your venue, season, and overall atmosphere will naturally influence your gown choice. Consider how formal your ceremony will be, what fabrics suit the setting, and whether sleeves or specific necklines will feel most comfortable.

It’s also worth thinking about balance – for example, how your dress complements your body shape and works alongside your partner’s outfit for a cohesive look. These early decisions make the later stages feel much more intuitive.

3. Secure Your Venue

Booking your venue early allows you to truly visualise your big day. Once you know the surroundings, it becomes a lot easier to imagine how your dress will move through the space, from the aisle to the dance floor. This also helps to ensure your photographer’s style aligns beautifully with both the setting and your attire.

10 – 11 Months Before Your Wedding:

1. Book Your Photographer & Key Suppliers

Your photographer doesn’t just capture moments, they document memories. We advise our brides to talk through how your gown, fabrics, and movement will be photographed on the day, so that your styling choices align with your photographer’s approach.

2. Choose the Right Bridal Boutique

We encourage you to take time researching boutiques that align with your taste and values, before you book any appointments. Look beyond aesthetics and consider service, transparency, and experience.

At Love Spell Design, our full collection is viewable online before your visit, allowing you to arrive with a clear vision. Most of our samples are UK sizes 8 to 12, and our stylists expertly pin gowns to help you visualise the final fit. We also carry a limited range of UK plus size samples, and we can discreetly adapt smaller samples with panels where needed.

You’re welcome to bring up to two guests, or attend solo if you prefer a more personal experience. Each appointment includes private use of one of our studio rooms, giving you space to relax and enjoy the process without distractions.

Rest assured, there’s no pressure to try a certain number of dresses or make a decision immediately. Some brides know instantly; others like to revisit a favourite. Both are completely normal.

Tip: Photos and short videos are invaluable at your appointment- movement often reveals what mirrors can’t. Our team will politely offer to take photos or videos for you during your appointment to help you record those special moments that assist with your final decision!

7- 9 Months Before Your Wedding:

1. Order Your Wedding Dress

Once you’ve found the gown that feels effortlessly “you,” it’s time to place your order. We recommend allowing 6 – 8 months for production time, plus around 2 months for alterations.

Some styles are available on a rush-order basis, which can significantly reduce waiting time and change when to buy your wedding dress. Don’t worry, our team will be there to guide you through what’s realistic based on your wedding date and measurements.

When ordering, we’ll take detailed measurements and advise you on the best size, in order to minimise alterations. Bridal sizing differs from high street sizing, so this step is essential. We’ll also discuss with you any custom options with you, such as sleeves or train adjustments, before you place your order.

This is the moment your wedding vision becomes tangible – a truly special milestone!

2. Coordinate Bridal Party Looks

With your dress chosen, you can begin styling your bridal party. Most brides aim for outfits that complement their gown and reflect the formality of the day. Also, if your dress has a train or intricate details, make sure your bridal party knows how to assist you comfortably.

3. Plan Dress Transportation

For destination weddings, cabin-approved dress-boxes, (or our complimentary handheld dust bags) are ideal so that your gown stays with you during travel. We also highly recommend traveling with a handheld steamer, unless your venue provides professional steaming.

For car or train journeys, keep your dress flat, protected, and cool. Avoid heavy items on top and minimise folding to minimise creasing.

Top Tip: Always check airline policies in advance – some allow dresses in crew wardrobes, which is handy!

1-3 Months Before Your Wedding:

1. Attend Alteration Appointments

Your first fitting usually takes place 2-3 months before the wedding and lasts around 30 minutes. Make sure to bring your wedding shoes and the correct (nude coloured) undergarments, as these directly affect fit and length.

Some brides require two fittings, as more complex gowns may require additional visits. These appointments are where your dress truly becomes custom-made for you.

Tip: Wear your wedding shoes to every fitting; heel height matters.

Extra Tip: When Should You Go Wedding Dress Shopping in Relation to The Veil?

Veils can be ordered pretty quickly, usually within one to two months. However, you may consider deciding on your veil once you have chosen the dress, to get it out the way. Other brides decide on their veil a little later on, closer to the alterations; it all depends on your wedding dress shopping timeline. Veils typically begin at £200 for simple styles, rising to £400 – £500 for detailed lace designs. Accessories such as sleeves, overskirts, jewellery, or hairpieces should also be factored into your overall budget. On average, our brides invest around £3,000 in total for dress, alterations, and veil.

2. Final Fitting & Collection

At your final appointment, we’ll check every detail, steam your gown, and prepare it for collection in a protective garment bag. We will also encourage you to practice moving, sitting, and bustling the train, to ensure that you feel completely confident on the day.

If you have any last burning questions about when you should buy your wedding dress, our team is always just a call or message away. At Love Spell Design, our goal is simple: for you to leave feeling calm, excited, and absolutely ready for your wedding day.
