Made-to-Order vs Off-the-Rack Wedding Dresses: What’s the Difference?
What’s the Difference Between Made-to-Order and Off-the-Rack Wedding Dresses?
When you’re shopping for your wedding dress, one of the first important decisions you’ll be faced with right from the get go is whether to choose one of our made-to-order gowns or one of our off-the-rack (otherwise known as sample sale) dresses. While both options can easily lead you to a joyful experience and finding “the one,” – each option suits very different timelines, budgets, and preferences.
At Love Spell Design, we offer both made-to-order and sample sale dresses in our London Showroom all year-round, and we understand that knowing the clear difference between these two options will help you to make a confident and informed decision. So rather than rushing and panicking, relax, grab a cup of tea and read through the step-by-step that we have provided below.
What Is a Made-to-Order Wedding Dress?
At Love Spell, our made-to-order wedding dresses are created specifically for you after you place your order. However, it’s important to note that made-to-order is not exactly the same as made-to-measure, (this is a common confusion).
Love Spell Made-to-Order Gowns Explained In Detail:
Once you have said yes to the dress, and decided to have your dress ordered in new, we will get started with the made-to-order process.
To create your made-to-order gown, we will firstly take your full measurements during your appointment – this usually includes your: bust, waist, waist-to-floor, bicep, hips, arm length and occasionally height measurements. These specific measurements may vary depending on your dress design and its most important elements. For example, a sleeveless dress will not require a bicep of arm length measurement, unless you opt for gloves or detachable sleeves in addition. Your bridal stylist is the expert and will know which measurements to take in person. Your measurements are then passed from the team to our factory, after your appointment. Your gown is ordered in the closest standard size to your measurements. If you fall between sizes, we may order different bodice and skirt sizes
We have carefully curated this process as a team to allow for the best possible final fit of your wedding dress, and this method helps to reduce any risks during our detailed production process.
It is important to note that sometimes a bride might decide to order their dress a little after their appointment. In this case, we always recommend the bride to come back in to have her measurements taken in person, so that they are most accurate when sent to the factory.
This is why if you really love a dress, we often will offer to take your measurements during the appointment anyway, even if you do not plan to make the decision that day – this simply saves you from coming back in if you do say yes later down the line.
Why We Don’t Offer Fully Made-to-Measure Dresses:
Wedding dresses typically take around 6 months to be produced. During that time, it’s completely normal for bodies to change. Ordering a fully made-to-measure gown too early can unfortunately result in:
- Your dress arriving far too small
- Increased alteration costs
- More added stress closer to the wedding date
Instead, we order the size that gives you the most flexibility, to avoid any issues. For example, if your measurements place you at the higher end of a size 8, we would usually recommend ordering a size 10. This is because taking a dress in is always easier (and more cost-effective) than letting it out.
You can relax, as our expert stylists will guide you through this decision carefully, factoring in your measurements, specific timeline, and any future body changes you anticipate.
So, What Is an Off-the-Rack (Sample Sale) Wedding Dress?
An off-the-rack wedding dress is a gown you purchase exactly as it is, directly from our sample sale rail. Sample sale wedding dresses are very common at many bridal shops across the UK, and they are both a great choice economically and environmentally.
At Love Spell Design, our sample sale rail is available all year, with occasional seasonal promotions such as:
- January sales
- Black Friday
- Christmas events
- At these promotions, you may expect to see extra discounts on our already heavily discounted prices. These book up quickly, so it’s best to ask your stylist or subscribe to our email to stay in the loop about our promotional sale days.
What to Expect from Our Sample Sale
- Dresses are regularly professionally cleaned and regularly quality-checked
- Some gowns may show light wear from being tried on, this is factored into the price
- Prices are discounted to reflect condition and age of the sample
- Before purchasing, we always ask for your confirmation that you’re happy with the gown’s condition
Once purchased, sample sale dresses can be taken home immediately. We do not have storage available at our facility.
Important Sizing & Availability Information:
- Sample Sale dresses have limited sizes
- There is usually only one of each style on this rail
- Dresses sell super quickly, and usually cannot be reordered
Alterations still apply, and we recommend allowing 2-3 months before your wedding for tailoring.

- Short wedding timelines
