How Many Wedding Dresses Should I Try On?

How Many Dresses Should I Try On Before Choosing “The One”?

One of the most common questions our brides ask us when they start the wedding dress shopping process is, “How many dresses should I actually try on before I decide? And honestly? – There isn’t a magic number!

Every bride is different. Some brides walk into their first appointment with us, slip into one gown, and instantly fall in love – believe it or not, this is totally normal. Others need to explore a variety of styles, fabrics, and silhouettes before they feel confident saying yes, which is also totally normal. What matters most, isn’t how many wedding dresses you try on, it’s how you feel when you finally find the right one.

How Many Wedding Dresses You Try On, Really Depends on You:

Your personality, decision-making style, and even how long you’ve been dreaming about your wedding dress all play a huge role in the dress you end up going for. If you’re someone who easily trusts their gut, you might only need a handful of gowns to get clarity. If you like to compare options, you may feel better trying on more before making such an important choice.

There’s no “wrong” way to shop – but there is a smarter way to do it.

Why We Recommend Shopping Around First:

We often suggest brides visit a few bridal boutiques before coming to us, because seeing different collections helps you narrow down what you truly love.

Trying on dresses in different environments allows you to discover:

  • Which silhouettes flatter you most

  • What fabrics feel best on your body

  • Whether you lean more classic, modern, romantic, or minimalist

This way, by the time you arrive at your final appointment, you’re not guessing anymore – you’re refining.

At Love Spell, we also offer wedding dress customisations. We are able to do this because all of our dresses are designed in house (we are not a stockist boutique / we do not sell wedding dresses by other designers).

Therefore, we often advise our brides to shop around at their favourite local boutiques first – to get an idea of the style elements they love, or try on their favourite designers. Once the bride has gathered some notes on the key styles she likes, we can help her to create a custom gown which features similar, or inspired elements, combining this with our signature house styles.

H2. The Sweet Spot: 5 Dresses Per Appointment, Maximum:

Here’s something many brides don’t realise when deciding how many wedding dresses to try on: trying on too many dresses in one sitting, or over a short period can actually make the decision a lot harder.

We recommend sticking to about five dresses in your initial try on period. And, if you are planning on trying up to five dresses per appointment, we recommend only booking 1-2 appointments at a time, spacing them at least a week apart.

This recommendation is to help you avoid something called “dress blindness”.  Once you’re hit with dress blindness in your shopping journey, everything starts to blur together. You forget what you loved about the first gown, you start overthinking small details, and suddenly nothing feels special anymore.

Therefore, fewer dresses = more clarity.

Trying on a smaller, well-chosen selection allows you to really feel each gown – how it moves, how it fits, and how it makes you feel. This is why when you book your appointment via our online form, we highly recommend that you list some of your favourite styles from our site. This gives us a general idea of what you like – but of course, you could end up walking away from our appointment having chosen a completely different dress! – This is also totally normal. Often brides think they have a style they love, and end up falling in love with something completely different on the day.

H3. It’s About Confidence, Not Counting:

The goal isn’t to hit a certain number of dresses – it’s to walk out knowing you’ve found a dress that feels like you. Whether that happens after three gowns or fifteen, the right dress will stand out because it gives you that calm, confident “this is it” feeling.

So, take your time, enjoy the process, explore your options – and when you’re ready, we’ll be here to help you say yes to the one that truly feels like it was made for you.
